Following public health advice “more important than ever", says Belfast Lord Mayor

Belfast Lord Mayor Alderman Frank McCoubrey has said it is more important than ever for people to follow public health advice in order to help stop the spread of Covid19 and prevent further restrictions.

“Like everyone, I am deeply concerned that the number of people testing positive for Covid19 is rising, and we are seeing hospital admissions increase,” said Alderman McCoubrey.

“Everyone has an important role to play in stopping the spread of this virus but there are still people who are not adhering to the public health advice around hand washing, face coverings, and social distancing. These may seem like very simple measures and some may wonder if they really make a difference – but they do; and we must all continue to do what we can to protect our loved ones and each other.

“The last few months have been an exceptionally difficult time for communities right across the city, and no one wants to see us go back to tighter restrictions or a more widespread lockdown, but unless people take their personal responsibilities seriously, unfortunately that may become necessary.

“I’m appealing to people that if they are in Belfast this weekend, shopping or having a bite to eat, that they follow the public health advice and help support our hospitality and retail sectors who have been working hard to put the necessary measures in place to operate safely, to protect staff and customers.

“Council officers have been working closely with city partners to support the city’s recovery journey, and we will continue to do so.

“These are challenging times for us all, but now is the time for people to pull together with renewed commitment to doing everything within their power to help stop the spread of Covid19. Please continue to follow the public health advice and stay safe Belfast.”
