Planning permission has been granted for a purpose-built aquarium in the Titanic Quarter, at the council’s Planning Committee meeting.

The planning application, by reefLIVE for the two-storey structure on land at Queen’s Road, includes a Coral Reef ocean tank, exhibition space with five zones, an education room, small retail area and an aquarium cafĂ© with outside seating. It will also include landscaping, car-parking and public realm works.

The development is estimated to generate 80-100 jobs during construction and 51 full-time jobs once operational.

The aquarium will be located opposite The Titanic Hotel and close to other visitor attractions in the area including Titanic Belfast.

Planning Committee Chair, Councillor John Hussey, said: “This is further good news for the city and its journey to recovery with this planned development and state-of-the-art visitor attraction seeing the creation of up to 150 jobs.”
