The Lord Mayor presented certificates to participants on the Belfast PEACE IV SCOPE project recently while visiting St Comgall’s on Divis Street, which has been transformed following a major restoration project.

SCOPE (St Comgall’s Community Outreach Programme and Exhibition) engaged local people on a range of cross community workshops, seminars, networking events and study visits to explore the rich history of the area with a good relations and peacebuilding focus. It led to the development of exhibition content and learning resources, presenting a shared interpretation of the period between 1969 and 1998.

Councillor Christina Black, said: “I’m delighted to be at St Comgall’s to celebrate with all the participants who took part in the Belfast PEACE IV SCOPE project.

“The concepts covered in this project are critical to informing a better understanding of ours and other societies. I hope it has also helped develop tolerance and understanding, which are fundamental to building good relations in our city – this is key to the Belfast PEACE IV Programme.”

SCOPE Programme Manager, Robert Crowe, said: “This programme has been extremely successful in bringing together people from across the area to share their interpretation and lived experience of what it was like living in the vicinity of St Comgall’s. The multi-faceted approach enabled a range of exhibition material and education resources to be developed which will be used throughout the world-class community exhibition space at St Comgall’s for years to come.”

Gerry McConville from Falls Community Council, said: “St Comgall’s Regeneration Project is an exciting £7m capital project jointly funded by Belfast City Council and The Executive Office, which has seen the old derelict school brought back into community use and restored as an iconic building in west Belfast. SCOPE has given us a chance to develop and deliver programmes that have informed and assisted the production of innovative and exciting exhibition material, charting an important period of the St Comgall’s story between 1969-1998.”

The EU-funded PEACE IV programme is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) with over £14 million invested in the council’s Belfast PEACE IV Local Action Plan to support peace and reconciliation in the city under three themes – building positive relations, shared spaces and services and children and young people projects.
