Gaeltacht Quarter street signs

  • Gaeltacht Quarter Street Signs Project

We approved a proposal for the erection of dual language nameplates in Irish for all streets within the Gaeltacht Quarter in Belfast. This proposal was approved at the Strategic Policy and Resources Committee on 20 October 2023.

This decision means that the normal process requiring individual applications and surveys for dual language street signs will not be required for those streets in the Gaeltacht Quarter. The proposed approach approved by the council is to erect dual language street signs in Irish in all streets within the Gaeltacht Quarter subject to considering the views of the occupiers of the street.

There are currently 122 streets in the Gaeltacht Quarter already approved with dual language street signs erected, with 302 streets remaining which are subject to this approach.

We sent a letter to occupiers of all properties in the remaining streets within the Gaeltacht Quarter on 24 January 2024 advising residents of this decision. A response form was also provided with this correspondence giving occupiers the opportunity to object to the proposal. In addition, an advert was placed in the Irish News and Andersonstown News on 31 January 2024 providing details of how residents within the remaining streets could object. The consultation with residents providing the opportunity to share their views has now closed.

    What happens next?

The responses from each street have been collated and the results will be presented to Council for a final decision on those streets which will have dual language street signs in Irish erected and those streets which will be subjected to the full procedure. No personal or identifying information will be presented as part of this process.

For any street where the level of objection is 15 per cent or more, street signs will not be erected as part of this project. The street will be subject to the normal procedure for consideration of dual language street signs. For more information, visit street naming and building numbering
