The role sport plays in peace building will be highlighted in an upcoming online conference this month.

‘The Role of Sport in Peace Building Conference’ on Wednesday 14 April (7pm-9pm) is being delivered through Belfast City Council’s PEACE IV programme, which is funded through the European Union and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The keynote speaker at the inaugural conference is Rory Best OBE who was Ireland and Ulster Captain and the most capped hooker for Ireland, with an impressive 100+ International and over 200 Ulster Caps to his name. Also speaking will be Marissa Callaghan, Northern Ireland Women’s Footballer and Richard Maguire, Chair of East Belfast GAA. East Belfast GAA is a cross-community team actively promoting friendship and cooperation between both sides of the political divide.

The free event is being hosted by U105 radio presenter and sports journalist Denise Watson and will also give an insight into the council’s PEACE IV On the Right Track! sports development programme which creates opportunities for young people and sports clubs to learn, share and play together.

Rory Best said:  “I’m looking forward to speaking at The Role of Sport in Peace Building Conference and highlighting the importance of sport and how it can have such a powerful role in peace building in Northern Ireland. I have always been very passionate for grassroots development in sport and how it enhances the advancement of communities and teaches young people about showing respect for others.”

Councillor John Kyle, Chair of Belfast City Council’s Shared City Partnership, said: “The Role of Sport in Peace Building Conference will shine a light on how sport can create an environment where people can come together to work towards the same goal, show respect for others and share space – all elements vital to peace building.

“Anyone can register to attend this virtual conference with all information on our website.”
