Transforming leisure services

We’re investing £105 million over the ten years to improve our leisure centres, programmes and services. This is the largest investment of its kind in the UK. It is a unique opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of our city, by delivering a quality service that meets the needs of our communities.

This investment forms part of our £400 million physical investment programme.

We're keen that each of the developments offer a unique selling point (USP) which will encourage people to move across the city to use the different facilities.

Timescales for delivery

Construction work on our capital redevelopments is taking place in distinct phases to minimise disruption to our services.

The first phase of this programme focused on the development of Olympia Leisure Centre, which opened in January 2017.

The redevelopment of Andersonstown Leisure Centre, Brook Activity Centre and Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre made up the second phase, with all three centres now open.

Phase three is now underway and the new Avoniel opened in November 2021. Work to restore and extend Templemore Baths got underway in November 2020 and it is due to be completed by autumn 2022.

The final phase of LTP will see a new leisure centre at Girdwood in north Belfast. We are working in partnership with Department for Communities to develop options for the new facility which will include a community swimming pool and changing for the existing 3G pitch alongside a new dry side leisure offering. Once options are developed we will consult with the local community and key and stakeholders. Pending funding confirmation we hope to start work on the new facility in early 2022.
