Join Santa’s elves and a host of other Christmas characters in Belfast city centre this festive season for sacks of family-friendly activities.

Following on from Saturday’s Christmas lights switch-on event, Belfast City Council is inviting visitors and residents to get into the festive spirit with a programme of free events and activities, including the return of the Winter’s Den at 2 Royal Avenue.

The venue has once again been transformed into a beautiful winter wonderland, with crafting workshops, silent discos, carol singing and choir performances, alongside the return of the Belfast Potters’ Market, sustainable gift wrapping workshops and even a New Year’s Eve céilí.

Furry friends can get in on the festive fun too, with the popular Crufty Christmas Fashion Show on Saturday 7 December, showcasing seasonal canine fashions on the catwalk, while the venue is also home to Santa’s Post Office, receiving letters to the North Pole until Sunday 21 December.

Look out too for pop-up performances and walkabout performers across the city centre, including a special fire and light show in the Cathedral Quarter this Friday 21 November and again on Friday 5 December, vintage swing dancing at Grand Central Station and family theatre show Ginger and Bread vs The Brussels Sprouts at 2 Royal Avenue.

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tracy Kelly, said “The countdown to Christmas in Belfast has officially started, and we’re inviting everyone to get involved, with a huge line-up of seasonal activities for all ages to enjoy.

“Everyone will feel welcome and cosy in our Winter’s Den – craft Christmas crackers and decorations, explore festive traditions from around the world, rock around the Christmas tree at a music event or just take a break from the bustle of the city with a story from Mrs Claus or a festive film and a hot drink.

“The Belfast Christmas Market at City Hall remains a huge draw for visitors and brings people into town to enjoy our shops, bars and restaurants, while the start of Translink’s night bus services from Friday 28 November, part-funded by council, will make it much easier for people to plan their nights out and provide extra options for a safe journey home.

“This year, we’ve also extended our Christmas lighting further into Ann Street, Arthur Street, Bank Square and Bridge Street, and there’s a huge range of music, pantomimes, comedy and art events to enjoy – many of which are funded by council.

“Our Safer Neighbourhood Officers will also be stepping up their patrols from the end of November as the shops open later, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for shoppers and visitors and supporting our city centre partners.

“Get involved on social media too – look out for our #BelfastChristmasCountdown content and share your own festive moments in the city with us.”
