Supplementary Planning Guidance

Local Development Plan (LDP) Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) provides additional advice and guidance specific to policies contained in the Belfast LDP Plan Strategy.

This SPG represents non-statutory planning guidance that supports, clarifies and/or illustrates by example, policies included within the Belfast LDP. The information set out in SPG should also be read in conjunction with the LDP Plan Strategy (dPS) and the Direction issued by the Department for Infrastructure following the independent examination of the dPS.

The SPG currently comprises the following LDP topics and policies:

• Affordable housing and housing mix
• Development viability
• Residential design (including adaptable and accessible accommodation)
• Residential extensions and alterations
• Placemaking and urban design
• Tall buildings
• Masterplanning approach for major development
• Advertising and signage
• Retail and main town centre uses
• Loss of zoned employment land
• Evening and night-time economy
• Sensitive uses
• Transportation
• Waste infrastructure
• Planning and flood risk
• Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)
• Trees and development

The above SPG documents were subject to public consultation at draft stage from 12 May 2022 to 4 August 2022.
