PEACE IV Shared Spaces

  • Shared spaces capital projects

Three major shared spaces capital projects in north and west Belfast are underway.

The council-led projects are funded through the EU’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Match funding has been provided by the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development in Ireland.

  • Projects supported

    Shankill Shared Women’s Centre

A £7.79 million purpose-built shared space for women and their families will be located at the interface area on Lanark Way in west Belfast. The aim is to create a welcoming, safe and accessible shared space for women and their families all communities.

    Black Mountain Shared Spaces Project

This project will create a £7 million shared community space on the former Finlay’s factory site in west Belfast. The new building will deliver cross community facilities, joint programming and outreach, with the aim of removing physical barriers in the area. It will be operated by Black Mountain Shared Space, an organisation which has been in operation since 2010.

    Forth Meadow Community Greenway

This is a £6.2 million project to connect sites through high-quality pathways along a 12 kilometre route from Clarendon Playing Fields to the new Transport Hub in the city centre. The capital works will create shared paths and cycle ways, with additional planting, new street furniture, signage, wayfinding and public art. There will also be enhancements to sites along the route including Springfield Park.

In parallel with the capital project, we are developing an exciting community activity and events programme at key sections along the greenway to help bring communities together and promote use of the shared space.
