Belfast Zoo achieves a silver Green Tourism Award

We have been awarded a silver Green Tourism accreditation in recognition of our sustainable practices within the zoo!

The Green Tourism Award is the largest and most established sustainable certification programme in the world.

The internationally recognised award is available to tourism attractions in Northern Ireland with funding from Belfast City Council. The scheme, delivered by Visit Belfast, aims to create 150 Green Tourism certified businesses across Belfast city in 2022.

Zoo Manager Andrew Hope explains, “At Belfast Zoo we recognise the importance of working towards a sustainable future for all. As a zoo, we have a special responsibility to do so, as we care for animals and participate in breeding programmes for endangered species, many of which are directly affected by climate change.”

Andrew continues, “We have been working hard to continually improve the way that we manage our 55 acre site in order to develop sustainable practices.  Over the years we have focused on areas such as improving our waste management, reducing our water consumption, using electric vehicles and enhancing biodiversity on site.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see that our continued efforts in this area have been formally recognised with a silver Green Tourism Award.”

Green Tourism’s Sustainability Assessor stated:

“Belfast Zoo have done an excellent job in achieving a Green Tourism silver award. Being environmentally focused is clearly part of the ethos of the business and is evident throughout. There are several examples of sustainable best practice on site including robust monitoring and management systems for energy, water, and waste, regular sustainability training and knowledge sharing amongst the team, and a commitment to reducing the impact of their supply chain.

Elsewhere, the zoo provides a fantastic array of experiences, events, and information on the topics of biodiversity and conservation that really helps connect and engage with their customers on these important issues. This first assessment provides Belfast Zoo with an excellent foundation to improve upon as they continue their green journey.”
